Make and glaze tea bowls (chawan) and cold water containers (mizusashi) using various methods (throwing and handbuilding), techniques and styles. Basic background information and properties about the pottery will be discussed.

The tea bowl (chawan) and cold water container (mizusashi) are two basic pottery used in Japanese Tea Ceremony. Tea bowls have been used in Japan for over 400 years, and are made and admired by potters throughout the world. We begin the year with a tea bowl and water container workshop with HPG member, Sanford Murata, using various methods, techniques and styles.

The workshop will be limited to 15 who are already competent enough to throw small items. A Second day will include glazing your own pieces from the previous week.

A half bag of clay will be provided but please bring your own pottery tools, small towel, ruler and lunch/beverage, also the following if you have them: light and dark slip, a small ball, such as a tennis ball and a propane torch.

  • February 22, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (HPG handbuilding area)

Cost: $175/person (members and current students only), fee includes clay.
