HPG Garden Makeover

Our garden continues to evolve and improve!

Led by HPG members Harinani Orme, Beau Bassett and Gilbert Chun, the Garden committee devoted many Saturday mornings over the past year to clear the studio garden of overgrown bramble, establish new walkways, test the hardiness of new plants, create montages, and water the grounds.

A lattice wall of dragonfruit and reclaimed bamboo was constructed to camouflage the freeway wall edging the property.  In an effort to incorporate native Hawaiian plants into our studio’s garden, botanist Clyde Imada was consulted about which of those plants might best survive the hot, dry climate of the site.  And landscaper Tommy Boyd was brought in to guide the conceptual transition, incorporation of new plants, pathways, and gathering areas.

On a dauntingly hot and humid weekend in mid-August, an enthusiastic group of HPG volunteers toiled to provide the manpower and heavy lifting to realize this phase of the Garden vision.

On the Fence

Towards the close of this year-long effort to make over HPG’s garden, students and members created “On the Fence” ceramic hangings. Inspired by the visual transformation experienced with the introduction of Totem Poles, the thought of creating new ceramic planters for mounting onto the Garden Fence was heartily welcomed.  The end result was another whimsical display of originality fostered by the studio among members and students.
